Gov Ambode, Lagos Lawmakers Bans Transport Unionism In Oshodi

The Lagos State Government has with immediate effect suspended transport unionism in Oshodi, a suburb in Lagos State. The decision came as a result of unrest in Oshodi area after the murder of a popular union leader, Mr Bello Rasaq aka Hamburger. Hamburger was a chairman of Motorcycles Operators Association of Lagos, Oshodi chapter.
Reacting to this decisoin, Hon Dipo who represents Amuwo Odofin constituency in Lagos while speaking with newsmen said 'the decision taken by the Governor is commendable because it is one aimed at restoring lasting peace in the area. Lagos state is home to all, no one will take laws into its hands, motorcycles have been ban on Lagos roads as you know, though some still operate in places like Festac, Satellite, Mile 2 in my constituency and other areas in Lagos but this decision will lead to a phaseout soon in Amuwo as well because this decision is a step forward. It is only beginning in Oshodi, after all development starts somewhere.'
The 40 lawmakers gave a go ahead after which the suspension order was disclosed at a press briefing on Monday by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transport, Anofiu Elegushi.
He said the ban will affect all the seven branches of the National Union of Road Transport Workers operating in Oshodi area.
The commissioner said while the order lasts, there will be no issuance of tickets or collection of money from commercial vehicles operating in the area.
He said the governor also ordered increased security cover for the area.
On Sunday, the Nigeria Police announced that the arrest of factional leaders of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN).
